File a CHAMPVA claim and arrange reimbursement

Sources checked: 25 October 2026

Practical guide

At a glance

Eligible CHAMPVA beneficiaries can use benefits overseas. Coverage rules, cost-sharing and allowed amounts still matter.

Who this is for

CHAMPVA-enrolled spouses, dependents and survivors using Thai providers.

Eligibility and coverage rules

CHAMPVA has no dedicated provider network. Ask whether the provider accepts assignment, meaning it accepts CHAMPVA's allowable amount. If it does not, you may have to pay upfront and bear charges above the allowable amount. Foreign claims use reasonable-and-customary billed amounts; payments are in U.S. dollars.

Steps to take

  1. Open the CHAMPVA online claim below, or use VA Form 10-7959A on paper.
  2. Attach the itemized statement and payment evidence; include the other insurer's explanation of benefits if applicable.
  3. Use the linked family-member direct-deposit instructions. Keep banking information off this website.
  4. If VA asks for missing evidence, select the existing-claim resubmission option online and attach the requested material.

Timing: Normally 1 year from treatment, or inpatient discharge. Retroactive CHAMPVA eligibility has a special 180-day period after the initial ID card is issued for eligible retroactive services. A request for additional information has its own deadline stated in the letter.

Official actions

Important limits

  • A catastrophic cap is not a promise to absorb every noncovered or above-allowable charge.
  • Do not assume a Thai hospital must accept CHAMPVA merely because U.S. Medicare-participating hospitals have particular obligations.
  • A Thai-language bill can be translated by CHAMPVA without a translation charge, but English documentation may reduce processing friction.

Confirm for your circumstances

Specific Thai hospital assignment arrangements and the allowable amount for a proposed service have not been verified. Confirm directly.

Additional requirements

  • Do not invent U.S. billing identifiers for a Thai provider; ask CHAMPVA how to supply foreign-provider details.
  • An unpaid estimate is not proof of payment.

The exact supported bank arrangement for a beneficiary with only a Thai account must be confirmed with VA's payment support.
