Thailand resident instructions
File overseas medical claims before the deadline
Practical guide
At a glance
Do not use one deadline or one form for every family member: CHAMPVA generally allows 1 year, FMP 2 years, and TRICARE overseas medical claims 3 years.
Who this is for
Anyone paying a Thai provider upfront or checking whether a provider filed a claim.
Eligibility and coverage rules
The usual clock runs from the date of service, or inpatient discharge. TRICARE's separate dental and pharmacy deadlines should not be assumed to follow the overseas medical deadline. CHAMPVA retroactive eligibility has a special 180-day filing window after the initial ID card is issued for eligible retroactive dates.
Steps to take
- Use the correct route: CHAMPVA online or VA Form 10-7959A; FMP online or VA Form 10-7959f-2; TRICARE overseas claims portal or DD Form 2642.
- Save submission confirmation, the claim reference and a complete copy. If the provider files, request confirmation rather than assuming it happened.
- Set a personal follow-up date well before the official deadline; respond to requests for missing evidence.
Important limits
- A credit-card total alone does not explain what care was provided.
- An estimate or balance-due notice is not proof that you paid.
- Never invent U.S. billing identifiers for a Thai provider; ask the payer how to document foreign-provider fields.
Confirm for your circumstances
Exceptions, appeals and retroactive eligibility must be checked against your actual decision letter. These are normal filing windows, not advice to wait.
