Thailand resident instructions
Prepare for a VA claim exam in Thailand
Practical guide
At a glance
You can pursue VA disability benefits from overseas. Give VA your actual physical location so an exam is not arranged around an unrelated mailing address.
Who this is for
Thailand residents filing a new disability claim, an increase or a review that may require an exam.
Eligibility and coverage rules
VA schedules a compensation-and-pension exam as close as possible to your home and needs current phone and email details. A C&P exam gathers evidence; it is not a treatment visit. Overseas residents should also know that VA's exam guidance excludes people living outside the U.S. and its territories from claim-exam travel reimbursement.
Steps to take
- Provide your physical Thai address, even if you use a separate mailing address. VA's overseas page describes submitting it with VA Form 21-4138.
- Confirm the exam location and time with the scheduler, including the local time zone. Ask promptly about any inability to attend.
- Submit new non-VA medical records before the exam through an official claim channel; do not rely on handing papers to the examiner.
Important limits
- The examiner cannot submit new treatment records for you.
- VA does not reimburse the cost of your own provider completing a private DBQ.
- Missing a requested exam can delay or adversely affect the claim; a private appointment is not permission to skip VA's appointment.
Confirm for your circumstances
A specific Thai exam location, available accommodation or telehealth option is not guaranteed. Confirm with the assigned scheduler before booking travel.
