Thailand resident instructions
Manage Social Security from Thailand
Practical guide
At a glance
Entitlement and payment outside the United States are different tests. A spouse's nationality, US residence history, relationship and the worker's record can change the result.
Who this is for
US retirees and non-US-citizen spouses or survivors living permanently in Thailand.
Eligibility and coverage rules
- SSA generally restricts payments to noncitizens after six full calendar months outside the US unless an exception applies. Thailand appears on Country List 4, but that listing has worker-record conditions and does not waive every additional dependent or survivor requirement.
- Certain noncitizen dependent and survivor beneficiaries must have lived in the US for at least five years in the qualifying family relationship. Exceptions exist; do not assume five years of marriage while living in Thailand satisfies a US-residence requirement.
- SSA uses foreign-enforcement questionnaires, including SSA-7162 for beneficiaries and SSA-7161 for representative payees. A direct deposit arriving normally does not eliminate reporting duties or make an agency questionnaire optional.
Important limits
US citizenship of the worker does not automatically remove every overseas restriction for a noncitizen spouse. SSI is also not the same program as Social Security retirement, survivors or disability insurance.
Enroll in Thailand international direct deposit
- Download SSA-1199-OP107, the Thailand-specific form. Confirm the receiving bank can complete it; the form requires a Thai-baht account.
- Complete and sign Section 1. Ask the bank to complete and sign Section 3, including the full account number and SWIFT/BIC code.
- Mail the completed form to the Section 2 destination: Federal Benefits Unit, U.S. Embassy, 1201 Roxas Boulevard, Ermita, Manila 0930, Philippines.
- Keep the existing account open until payments arrive in the new account. Report your actual Thailand residence and later address changes to SSA.
- For Thailand case assistance, SSA's country directory lists FBU.Manila@ssa.gov and +63 2 5301 6200. Ask for the appropriate secure document-submission instructions; do not put a full SSN or bank details in an email subject line.
Check before acting
This is the SSA international-direct-deposit route, not a promise about a bank's separate US-ACH arrangement or the deposit instructions for VA, DFAS or OPM.
